In their home opener Fundy United squeezed by Crazy Babes 1-0 on a goal by Kelsey Duplessis. The Saint John rain and wind certainly made for difficult conditions for both teams as they started off fairly even. As the 1st half progressed Fundy united began to control possession but struggled to find the final pass or quality in front of goal.
Head coach Jason Brown stated that “Our goal in this game was to find some chemistry and control the tempo in attack and defend in an organized manner. With so many new players passing the ball quickly and keeping everyone involved was key. We controlled well in attack but lacked consistency and were vulnerable to the counter attacking speed of Crazy Babes. They (CB) worked very hard and closed space quickly.”.
In the 2nd half Fundy United had the wind and moved to a more attacking back three. Brown indicated that “We not only wanted the ball more but were much more efficient in our support and allowed the ball to circulate quickly. We really began to control the game and created a lot of chances while being more organized defensively. Unfortunately we were rusty in front of goal and credit to the Crazy Babes they played the full ninety. We now have two weeks of training to build more chemistry and establish how we want to play. This very young team is hungry for success and they will learn a lot of valuable lessons this year as we strive to be a force in the McCain NBPSLW.”
The Wicked Good Graphics Crazy Babes opened the season with a 3-1 over the Saint John Soccer Club U-18 team at the Canada Games Stadium in Saint John, New Brunswick. Saint John started the game started with a superior effort using well executed passing and keeping good possession during the first 20 minutes. However the CB defense held strong and kept the pressing Saint John squad from taking an early lead.
A breakdown in the midfield for Saint John had Melissa Beaulieu carry the ball down the left wing and cross the ball that end up in front of the Saint John goal for Marie-Philip Dumont to open the scoring at 25 minutes for the Crazy Babes. The lead was short-lived when Saint John tied the game 3 minutes later on a long range strike that beat the Crazy Babes keeper Frederique Bossé.
The CB’s regained the lead at 38 minutes on a brilliant left-footed strike from Tamara Tompkins from 20 m out. The game was 2-1 after 45 minutes. The Crazy Babes limited the scoring chances for the Saint John club in the second half and managed to add a scrappy goal by Melissa Mazerolle to closed out the scoring at the 85th minute after a scramble in front of the Saint John net.
The games was well-played in the port city. The next game is scheduled for May 26 in Grand Falls.
